I think perhaps you misunderstand free speech. It is not a concept with no limits.

I understand it has limits. Not liking what someone says is not or shouldn't be one off them. Sadly, in the times we currently live in, that is not really the case any longer.

Well, as I said, it isn't about not liking it, it's about the implied threat. Nigger, Jew scum etc. are real threats - threats of violence. Everyone understands their meaning, there's no subtlety. People who talk like that aren't interested in sharing opinions, talking about issues, they're trying to start something. Pretty much anywhere you go in society, if you do that sort of thing, you're going to be asked to stop and if you don't you're removed from the premises eventually. Not a free speech issue.

Someone who is here insulting racial, ethnic or religious minorities is making the place a hostile and unsafe environment for members of the groups he's threatening. That is not fair to those people. It isn't allowed in the workplace, either - employers disallow it rightly so, so that they won't be sued by employees who feel they can't work there safely. Is that a violation of free speech? You simply don't understand what free speech means. It's a lot less free than you think it is, and that's not always a bad thing.

and its not fair to the IA contributors who use the forum. "Hate Speech" is a dicey subject, to me, I_S went over the line
- first, not using a different sub-forum - as I suggested to him.
- using racial slur's as a hurtful weapon (to me, ragtop is acceptable, and I was known to call the N.Vietnamese enemy, gooks, but I'm kinder now).
- Getting personal and assuming most Deadheads are the enemy left, shit, until a decade ago I was too stoned to even care to vote.
- I think he shmoozes with some bands and has a very reputatable side. Here, he comes out of his mentally ill closet to vent at his "enemy"

this very post is feeding him so i bid you a dew http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsKOXDUh2Y0

Hey BD33--seriously, such language...if you read all of RLO's posts, it's the "principle" of it that matters. Personally, I am confident that RLO isn't afraid but recognizes that the issue is one worth considering for those that aren't so much afraid as deeply offended.

EG, I'll never forget my kids and wife and I driving around and a really disgusting rap song came on. I changed the channel, and one complained. They were young teenagers, but the point was that the song was deeply offensive (trust me) to their mother, much less soon to be girlfriends, and there is no amt of discussion that will convince me it's good for society to even talk about women in that fashion.

Seriously. But anyway, lets try to keep it clean, all the way around, eh? Just think for a moment if the answer was "well, yeah--I am scared..." because hate speech had caused some issue.

Just my usual plea for lets all be friends, or at least friendly while we do this crap.

So by your way of thinking, Blue Devil should be exiled for the christianity- swallows line from a few days ago. I am a christian but not a Bible thumper but a once in awhile attendee but I take it for what it is. Nothing.

Hey - but in my defense, I did post a righteous clip of the Violent Femmes singing FAITH. Here's another micah will appreciate:

Gordon and Bryan - old high school pals of Kevn Kinney. Tis a fact.

Christ is cool; it's those Christians I have a problem with....

"Christ is cool; it's those Christians I have a problem with...."

a modern interpretation of the Gandhi quote...

“I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

Yep - that's what I was ripping off. Then again, Gandhi was known to drink his own urine and get upset if he had a "nocturnal emission" when sleeping with young women. Freaking lawyer - can't trust any of 'em.

What? Why would he be exiled for his christianity?
I might suggest he be exiled if he announced that non-christians should be killed, but not for being christian, or talking about being christian. you're missing the point.

in fact, it makes an excellent example, 'cus I am indeed regularly annoyed by religious talk, but I don't want religious people removed from the forum.

I'm not religious, and I'm often twitching when talk turns religious. But that's my problem. It doesn't mean other people shouldn't talk about religion. That's all I meant. There isn't a lot of proselytizing at this forum.

I'm also very interested in certain types of debate about religion (and have spent many hours of my life in such debates). That's not when I'm uncomfortable - I'm uncomfortable only when other people assume everyone listening shares their views and experiences and/or the talk suggests that nonreligious people are basically losers. But there too, I really do like free speech, so have at it with the baby Jesus-talk at Christmas or Mohammad-talk or Buddha-talk, as long as the nonbelievers are free to say our piece in return if we want.
